Essays on empathy and political behaviour

Abstract:

Society is purportedly plagued by a lack of empathy. Political theorists, politicians, and the media frequently argue that we need to be more empathic, and that increasing empathy can be a solution to many of the problems that modern society is facing. In this thesis, I analyze the role of empathy in political behaviour, focusing on three pressing issues: affective polarization, the coronavirus pandemic, and how emotions decrease empathic responses.
