Rule insertion revisited in Optimality Theory

Abstract:
The purpose of this poster is to examine the consequences of applying Optimality-Theoretic analysis to the interaction between rhotacism and liquid dissimilation in Latin. Watkins (1970) argued that, in a rule based morpho-phonology, this interaction had to have come about as a result of rule insertion; I argue that if we use an Optimality-Theoretic model of the morphology-phonology interface, the need for rule insertion (or anything like it) disappears.
