Human haematopoiesis resembles a complex hierarchy, however most intermediate stages are only poorly defined. Efforts to characterise human progenitors have been inconsistent and failed to integrate previous knowledge. Furthermore, characterisation of normal progenitors has important implications in acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) biology.
