Hyperglycaemia induced immunomodulation of macrophages in diabetic vascular disease

Abstract:

Background: The mechanisms by which diabetes increases atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease risk even after glucose normalisation remains unclear. We hypothesised that: (i) hyperglycaemia alters cellular metabolism; (ii) these changes drive pro-inflammatory responses, which remain altered after glucose normalisation and (iii) these increase atherosclerosis in vivo.
