In sympathetic neurons innervating the heart, action potentials activate voltage-gated Ca2+ channels and evoke Ca2+ entry into presynaptic terminals triggering neurotransmitter release. Binding of transmitters to specific receptors stimulates signal transduction pathways that cause changes in cardiac function.
