Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is classified as an anxiety disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual IV of the American Psychiatric Association. It is characterised by three main symptom clusters: re-experiencing (of which flashbacks are the hallmark symptom); hyperarousal; and avoidance.
